A striking example of high Victorian craftsmanship, this hinged bangle, circa 1870, is crafted in 14 karat yellow gold and finished with black enamel. Black enamel was both in fashion and a symbol of mourning in the mid Victorian era; it brought to mind dignity, depth, and remembrance. Following the death of Prince Albert in 1861, which kept Queen Victoria in prolonged mourning until her own death in 1901, and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1965, there was increased popularization of jewelry with black accents beyond memorial use which continued until around 1880.
Accented with rose cut diamonds, with an approximate weight of 0.40 carat, a cut prized since the 17th century for its soft, romantic sparkle in candlelight, this piece embodies the balance between sentiment and opulence. The inside diameter measures 2 1/4 by 1 7/8 inches, and should fit an average sized wrist.
Please note that all pieces offered are genuine antique and vintage and have been left in their original, unaltered condition to preserve their historical integrity. While each item is carefully inspected prior to sale, signs of age and wear are to be expected and are embraced as part of the piece’s character. Antique jewelry should always be worn with care and consideration to ensure its longevity.
