Made in the Art Nouveau style, this ring was crafted by Potter & Mellen, the renowned Cleveland firm founded by master craftsman Horace Potter in 1900. Potter became widely respected for his work in jewelry, silverware, and decorative arts through the Potter Studio. Although the design carries all the signatures of a classic Art Nouveau piece, it was likely handcrafted after 1933, when the firm formally became Potter & Mellen. Louis Mellen, who had joined the company in 1921, later managed the store and became Potter’s partner.
Potter was especially known for redesigning antique jewelry, and his use of early, high-crowned old European cut diamonds in this ring reflects his commitment to historical accuracy. It is very possible that this piece represents a redesign of a client’s inherited jewel, using heirloom stones, or a faithful remake of a well-loved original. The ring bears the hallmark for Potter & Mellen along with a gold purity mark.
The largest diamond has been graded by GIA and is accompanied by certificate #5232481525, stating the stone weighs 1.45 carats and is K color, VS2 clarity. The accent stones have a total approximate weight of 1.65 carats and are graded I–J color. The three smaller accent stones are SI1–SI2 clarity, and the largest accent stone is graded I1 clarity.
US ring size 7.5, may be resized within reason.
