An oval gold locket featuring hand engraving across the surface, interrupted by a bold Greek key enamel motif in deep blue. The contrast between the linear geometry of the enamel and the soft, flowing engraved ground gives the piece a slightly more graphic, late 19th century feel. Crafted in 18 karat yellow gold, circa 1880.
The Greek key, or meander, is an ancient motif associated with infinity, continuity, and the enduring nature of life and memory, making it especially fitting within a sentimental piece such as this. The interior retains its original braided lock of hair, a quiet but intimate detail that places the locket firmly within the Victorian tradition of mourning and remembrance, where jewelry served as both adornment and a deeply personal keepsake.
