This Retro era ring by Ludwig Fessner & Co. centers an old European cut diamond of approximately 0.35 carat, graded I–J color and SI1 clarity, set within a hand engraved starburst motif. The diamond is nestled in a rounded bombe dome of polished 14 karat yellow gold, bearing the maker’s mark of the firm.
The term “bombe” in jewelry is believed to derive from the French dessert bombe glacée, a molded ice cream confection known for its rounded silhouette. Dome and bombe rings gained popularity in the 1940s as jewelers moved away from the rigid geometry of Art Deco toward softer, more voluminous forms that reflected postwar optimism. The star set diamond recalls late Victorian starburst, flush set rings, a subtle homage to antique styles that continued to influence mid century design.
